Ask what lab the samples go to and whether it is accredited, ask for the raw lab report rather than a summary, and ask whether the outdoor control sample is included. Those three answers separate a real test from a sales visit.

What you are paying for, line by line

An inspection fee buys time and judgement. A sample fee buys laboratory work. Quotes that look wildly apart are usually one company bundling three samples into a headline price and another quoting the visit alone and charging per cassette afterwards, which is why this calculator makes you say how many samples you want rather than hiding them in a package.

The sample count that matters is not the one in the brochure. One sample per affected room, plus one taken outdoors at the same time, is the shape of a defensible test. The outdoor control is the part people cut, and it is the part that makes the indoor number mean anything: Toronto air in August carries a spore load of its own, and a result with no baseline beside it can be read whichever way suits whoever is reading it.

Testing before remediation and testing after it answer different questions and get quoted differently. Before, you are asking what is here and how far it goes. After, you are asking whether the crew finished, which is why a clearance test is worth paying an outside party for. Ontario has no registry for either trade, so the independence is something you arrange rather than something the province guarantees.
