Can I remove mold myself, or do I need a professional?

Health Canada advises homeowners to clean only small areas of mold themselves and to bring in a qualified professional for larger areas. Many Canadian guidelines use roughly one square metre (about ten square feet) as the dividing line. Larger jobs, hidden mold, or anyone with breathing problems or a weakened immune system should use a certified remediator who can contain the area and protect indoor air quality.

How does professional mold removal work?

Remediation done to the IICRC S520 standard runs like this: seal off the work area with containment and negative air pressure so spores do not spread, run HEPA air scrubbers, remove and bag contaminated porous materials, HEPA-vacuum and wipe the remaining surfaces, then dry everything. The single most important step is fixing the moisture source first, because mold always returns if the underlying water problem is left unsolved.

Why does mold grow in the attic in winter?

Attic mold in a Canadian winter is almost always a condensation problem: warm, moist air leaks up from the house into a cold attic, and poor ventilation or insulation lets it condense on the underside of the roof sheathing. Removing the mold without fixing the airflow and moisture source just lets it come back, so a good remediator addresses ventilation and air sealing, not only the visible growth.

Should the same company test and remove the mold?
